Deportivo La Coruna can end Real Madrid's unbeaten run - president

Deportivo La Coruna president Tino Fernandez believes his team can prevent Real Madrid from breaking their 34-game unbeaten record when the teams meet at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Madrid's last setback was a 2-0 defeat at Wolfsburg in the Champions League on April 6 last season, with their current run equalling the record established during the 1988-89 campaign when Leo Beenhakker was coach.

"I don't care if we play against a Segunda Division side or Real Madrid, any game can be won," Fernandez told Marca. "In a given game, we can beat Real Madrid and I believe we can beat them."

Deportivo have not won away from home since a 2-0 triumph at Villarreal on May 6. They have taken three points -- all from draws -- in their seven away games this season.

Gaizka Garitano's side ended Real Sociedad's five-match unbeaten run with a 5-1 home win on Monday to record their first victory since Oct. 1.

"We are arriving in good form," Deportivo forward Joselu, who joined the Galician side on a season-long loan from Stoke this summer, told AS. "We needed a win like against Real Sociedad to lift the sack of stones we had on our backs. We would prefer a different team now, not to be going to the Bernabeu, but we are excited and optimistic. Why can't we get something there?"

Joselu, who played for Madrid's reserve side Castilla for three seasons and made one appearance for the first team before joining Hoffenheim in 2012, is looking forward to coming up against his old club.

"I enjoyed my two years at Madrid like a little boy," he said. "Going back will be emotional. I made my Primera debut there, and scored. I was there two years, I have many good memories. I will try and enjoy it as much as I can. I don't know if I will celebrate if I score, it depends on the adrenaline of the moment, the timing."

Deportivo are currently 16th in the La Liga table and 21 points adrift of leaders Real.

"We should be further up in the standings considering our performances," Fernandez said. "We should have at least seven or eight points more than we do but the reality is that we have taken 13 points so far. There are still many games left and we can't get nervous. Aims are not achieved in December. We need to take it one game at a time. I see the team playing very well and I think we will finish higher than we did last season [15th]."
