The first set of La Liga fixtures saw a total of 40 goals scored, representing the highest total for the Spanish top flight's opening round in over 60 years. It was a drastic improvement from the 12 goals in La Liga's first week last season but six shy of the record 46 scored in the 1955-56 campaign. Barcelona beat Real Betis 6-2 on Saturday, while Sevilla enjoyed a 6-4 win over Espanyol later the same day. Las Palmas then beat Valencia 4-2 on Monday to take the tally to 40 -- the highest total since round 20 last season, when 41 goals were scored. Barca also had a starring role that week, beating Athletic Bilbao 6-0 on Jan. 17.
