Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane targets Euro 2016 consistency

France defender Raphael Varane has said he wants to put inconsistencies behind him at Euro 2016 after admitting "individual errors" had led to him spending time on the Real Madrid bench.

Varane, 23, has sat out many of his club's bigger games in recent months, with boss Zinedine Zidane preferring to start with Sergio Ramos and Pepe at centre-back.

But he is determined to make up for that next month and "turn a corner" when he is expected to form a strong partnership with Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny at the tournament in France.

"From the start of the season until November, I played almost all the games," Varane told AFP.

"It's true, too, that there were some quite unusual individual errors. But over the whole season, that's not what I've got to remember. There were quite a few positive things.

"It's true that I would have loved to play the decisive matches at the end of the season, particularly in the Champions League, but they are the coach's decisions."

The former Lens player said he was hopeful that assured displays for France would help him regain a starting place at club level.

"I think a player needs to blossom and to feel that he's important," he added.

"I'm trying to continue to work day to day, to develop. I know the qualities that I have -- I know what I'm capable of.

"The idea is really to turn a corner this summer. I hope to continue my development after five years with Madrid."
