Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone sees coaching Argentina in future

Diego Simeone says he could well coach Argentina further along in his career, while the Atletico Madrid boss maintains he has a good relationship with current Albiceleste captain Lionel Messi.

Simeone has won the Europa League, Copa del Rey and La Liga trophies in his four-and-a-half seasons at Atletico, and now has the chance to avenge 2014's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in a rematch in this season's decider in Milan on May 28.

The former tough-tackling midfielder was awarded 106 caps for Argentina, winning the 1991 and 1993 Copa America trophies and also appearing at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups.

Speaking to Radio de la Red of his home country, Simeone said that he saw himself as Argentina manager at some point, but for the moment he was happy with Atletico.

"To coach the [Argentina] national team will always be a life objective, but I am not waiting on it, it will come in the future," Simeone said. "I am happy where I am at the moment, as I am with a group of people all united with one goal."

Simeone's Atletico knocked Messi's Barcelona out of the Champions League in this season's quarterfinals, while Los Colchoneros also denied the Blaugrana when winning La Liga on the last day of the season two years ago. The pair spoke when their teams met, Simeone said.

"[Messi] is the best in the world," he said. "We always talk and greet each other. We have a normal relationship, like with [fellow Argentina and Barcelona player Javier] Mascherano."

Simeone's comments came after former Argentina physical preparation specialist Carlos Dibos, has claimed that Messi picks coaches and players for the national team, saying this was not good for the country but did not mean the Blaugrana star would not work with Simeone, his brother-in-law.

Dibos worked with the national team during Alfio Basile's time in charge from 2006 until 2008, when Basile made way for Diego Maradona to take over ahead of the 2010 World Cup with the side struggling to qualify for South Africa.

"Messi picked the coaches, picked the players, picked everything for the national team," Dibos said on Radio de la Red. "We all know, and it is screwing things for Argentina, if we can say things clearly."

Dibos said that anyone who thought that the Atletico coach and Messi could not work together were mistaken.

"In our country, resentment, rancour and selfishness make the people talk in ways you cannot understand," he said. "I cannot believe that there are journalists and people who say that Simeone will never coach the national team because Messi does not want him. They are crazy.

"Simeone knows what is going on -- he knows that coincidences do not exist. I have been married to his sister for 20 years, I spend a lot of time with him, go to his training sessions, and I take my hat off at what I see. It is not just luck that has brought him to a second Champions League final."
