Gareth Bale breaks Gary Lineker's British record for La Liga goals

Gary Lineker has congratulated Gareth Bale after the Real Madrid forward overtook his record to become the all-time leading British goal scorer in La Liga.

Wales international Bale's goal in the 4-0 victory over Sevilla took his tally to 43 in 76 games, exceeding the Englishman's record of 42 goals in 103 games for Barcelona between 1986 and 1989.

Bale, who has recently returned from injury and will miss Wales' friendlies this month, said: "I'm very happy. This new record gives me joy and now the important thing is to improve."

He added on the club's official website: "You have to try to improve. It's a good result and we have to carry on like this, keeping this rhythm. It's good news to have all the squad available and we have enjoyed having everyone available".

"We knew that it would be a difficult game today, we played very good and we have to continue like this in the rest of the games. We're working a lot and we hope to give everything in each game.

"I'm not going away with the national team, I'll stay here with other players and I'll train to be at 100 percent."

The 26-year-old moved to the Bernabeu from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 for €100 million.
