Real Madrid fans condemned for offensive chanting in Clasico

La Liga's authorities have formally denounced Real Madrid fans for offensive chanting during last weekend's La Liga Clasico against Barcelona at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

LFP (Liga de Futbol Profesional) observers at the game, which Barca won 4-0, say they witnessed the chants coming from the official "Animation Section" of Madrid fans in the Bernabeu's south stand.

Following the procedures laid out by the Spanish FA, the LFP has formally written to the Spanish government's "Anti-violence commission" to condemn the chants, and have also communicated its findings to the Spanish FA's Competition Committee.

A La Liga statement said offensive chants directed at the Catalan side could be clearly heard coming from a group of around 1,500 individuals at two different occasions during the 90 minutes.

"Some 1,500 fans located in the 'Animation Section' in the south stand chanted, for about 15 seconds each time, in a coordinated and choral fashion, the anthem of the visiting side, ending with the expression 'Barca, Barca, mierda' [s---], without the rest of the fans joining in," the statement said.

"In minute 58, during play, in the same area of the ground, the 'Animation Section' of the south stand, some 1,500 home fans chanted, in a coordinated and choral fashion, for approximately 10 seconds: 'Ole, ola, being from Barca is subnormal', without the rest of the fans joining in."

The Bernabeu's "Animation Section" was put in place two years ago when club president Florentino Perez formally moved to expel the extreme "Ultras Sur" from the stadium. It is theoretically made up of supporters who cheer their team loudly while being generally well behaved.

The Anti-Violence commission typically asks clubs to identify misbehavers and does not hand down collective sanctions such as fines or ground closures. When chants against Barca star Lionel Messi coming from that area of the Bernabeu were denounced during the 2014-15 campaign, a number of individuals were identified from TV footage and had their season tickets taken away by Madrid.

The Anti-violence Commission asked Barcelona to identify fans who chanted "Cristiano is a Drunk" during games last season, but no individuals were ever punished.

The LFP cracked down on this issue as part of a general move against bad behaviour by fans following the death of a Deportivo La Coruna ultra during a fight before a game at Atletico Madrid in November 2014.

Supporters of other clubs including Sevilla, Real Betis, Espanyol, Elche, Athletic Bilbao, Rayo Vallecano and Granada have previously been cited by the LFP for offensive chanting or anti-social behaviour at or around grounds on matchdays.
