Real Madrid's meeting with Barcelona at the Bernabeu last month saw the most expensive collection of players on the field of any match in Europe this season, according to a CIES Football Observatory study.

The clasico in October saw talent worth 690 million euros take to the field, despite the absence of the injured Gareth Bale, who was reported to have cost Madrid 100 million euros when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013.

Additionally, Barcelona did not pay fees for Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Pedro or Sergi Roberto, who all featured in their side's 3-1 defeat, while Madrid captain Iker Casillas also emerged through his club's academy.

Madrid, whose side featured big-money signings including Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez, contributed 424 million euros to the total, with Luis Suarez and Neymar contributing the bulk of Barca's 267 million euros.

Manchester City's 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea in September was second on the CIES list, with 578 million euros of talent on display.

Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa, both signed from Atletico Madrid, were the two most expensive players on display in the Premier League clash, which has been dubbed "El Cashico" in reference to the two clubs' wealthy owners.

Ligue 1's most expensive match was Le Classique between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille, which featured players worth 503 million euros.

PSG had by far the more expensive team at 414 million euros, with talents including Edinson Cavani, David Luiz and Thiago Silva all on show, with Andre-Pierre Gignac -- reported to have cost Marseille around 18 million euros in 2010 -- the most expensive player for the visitors, who lost the match 2-0.

Monaco, who had invested heavily following their return to Ligue 1 in 2013, allowed big-money signings Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez to move on in the summer.

Bayern Munich's meeting with Borussia Dortmund topped the list for the Bundesliga, with 272 million euros' worth of talent starring at the Allianz Arena earlier this month.

Bayern, whose players totalled 175 million euros, beat Dortmund 2-1 with a team that included former BVB stars Mario Gotze -- their most expensive player on the day -- and Robert Lewandowski, who arrived on a free transfer.

The German champions' record signing, Javi Martinez, missed the match through injury, while Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile, who was reported to have cost 20 million euros, also did not feature.

Serie A clubs had broken the world transfer record more regularly than clubs in any other nation during the second half of the 20th century, but its most expensive game, between Inter Milan and Napoli, saw only 263 million euros of talent on display.

Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain, who arrived from Real Madrid for 40 million euros in 2013, was the most costly man on the field during the 2-2 draw last month.
