Ex-Barcelona president loses appeal to avoid jail

BARCELONA, Spain -- Former Barcelona club president Jose Nunez has lost an appeal to a court verdict that sentenced him to two years and two months of prison after being found guilty of bribing tax inspectors.

A Barcelona-based court issued a statement on Tuesday saying a judge rejected the appeal filed by Nunez requesting the sentence to be suspended.

Nunez was found guilty by a court in 2011 for having bribed tax inspectors. The original sentence of six years was later reduced.

The 83-year-old Nunez, who owns a construction company, was president of Barcelona from 1978-2000.
