The Brazil international sustained the injury following Juan Zuniga's heavy challenge during the quarterfinal defeat of Colombia.

The 22-year-old was ruled out for the rest of the tournament -- with the Selecao crashing out in the semifinals against Germany -- while Brazil doctor Jose Luiz Runco has said he can return to training in 40 days.

Barca released a statement on Wednesday confirming the extent of Neymar's injury, while saying he will return to the Catalan city to continue his recovery on Aug. 5.

The statement read: "Medical services visited Neymar Jr at the player's home in Brazil this week.

"The club's medical services confirmed the CBF's [Brazilian Football Confederation] diagnosis that Neymar had fractured the L3 vertebrae in his back.

"The CBF and Barca's medical services are in agreement on the type of treatment the player will undergo in his recovery process.

"The player is recovering well and he'll continue his recovery in Barcelona starting on Aug. 5.

"Neymar Jr sustained the injury on Friday during the World Cup quarterfinal match against Colombia."

Meanwhile, Barca have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Villarreal for the sale of Jonathan dos Santos.

Dos Santos, who will link up with his brother Giovani, will cost his new club up to two million euros.

An official statement read: "FC Barcelona and Villarreal CF have agreed to terms for the player Jonathan dos Santos.

"The transfer fee, which is a combination of a fixed sum and variables, could reach two million euros, and FC Barcelona reserve the right to be involved in the possible future sale of the player."
