Spain considers launching bid to host Euro 2028 or 2030 World Cup

The president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has reportedly sought the backing of Spain's government for a bid to host either the 2028 European Championship or the 2030 World Cup.

On Wednesday, Luis Rubiales attended a protocol meeting between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at La Moncloa, the official residency of Spain's head of government.

El Pais reported that among the issues raised was the possibility that Spain could stage a major tournament in the next 12 years.

Infantino, who travelled to Spain on July 24 to attend Rubiales' first general RFEF assembly since the latter was elected, said he was satisfied with the meeting.

"The important thing is that the relationship between the government and the RFEF is good," he said. "You have to go hand in hand."

Rubiales described the meeting with Sanchez as "cordial and productive," saying all parties had shown a willingness to "improve together."

Spain has previously hosted the 1964 European Championship and the 1982 World Cup, while the 2020 European Championship will take place in 12 different continental cities including Bilbao.
