Spanish FA names interim president after Angel Maria Villar suspension

Angel Maria Villar talks during the 64th FIFA Congress at the Transamerica Expo Center in Sao Paulo.
Angel Maria Villar's presidency of the Spanish FA has been suspended.

The Spanish football federation has named a new president while Angel Maria Villar, suspended for a year by the country's top sports authority, remains in prison on charges of corruption.

The federation's board named treasurer Juan Luis Larrea as interim president on Wednesday.

Villar was arrested last week along with his son Gorka, federation vice president Juan Padron and Ramon Hernandez, the secretary of the regional federation of Tenerife.

Police accuse them of improper management, misappropriation of funds, corruption and falsifying documents.

Both the Villars and Padron were denied bail and transferred from police cells to prison while the investigation continues.

Villar has been the head of Spain's football federation since 1988. He is also the senior vice president of FIFA and a vice president of UEFA.
