RFEF chief Angel Maria Villar gets ultimatum from Miguel Cardenal

Spain's secretary of sport Miguel Cardenal has told Spain football federation (RFEF) president Angel Maria Villar that he must call elections before the end of the year.

Villar, at the helm of the RFEF since 1988, came under scrutiny for delaying the presidential elections that were initially scheduled for earlier in the year.

The vote had been pushed back until December while Villar considered running for UEFA chief.

"The Federation wants nothing to do with me, especially its president," Cardenal told Cadena Ser. "But the law has to be enforced. Elections have to be called.

"The federation had to call for elections before April 30 and it hasn't yet. He must call for them immediately."

Villar declared he would run for an eighth successive term at the helm of the RFEF if he failed to win election as Michel Platini's successor at UEFA.

However, the 66-year-old withdrew his UEFA candidacy after failing to get enough support. Slovenian Aleksandar Ceferin was elected president on Sept. 14.

Villar, Cardenal and La Liga chief Javier Tebas have frequently been at odds.

Tebas accused Villar of pushing back the presidential elections in order to run for UEFA's top job.

Villar is looking to fight off a challenge from former ally Jorge Perez to remain in charge of the RFEF.

Perez was dismissed by Villar as RFEF secretary general on Oct. 11.
