Diego Costa backed by Spain coach despite international goal drought

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has backed Chelsea forward Diego Costa despite his struggles in front of goal for his country.

Costa, 27, has only one goal in 11 appearances for La Roja and was left out of the Euro 2016 squad by former coach Vicente del Bosque.

He came on as a first-half replacement for injured striker Alvaro Morata in the 2-0 friendly win over Belgium last week and impressed despite not scoring.

With Real Madrid forward Morata now a doubt for Monday's 2018 World Cup qualifier against Lichtenstein, Costa is set to lead Spain's attack.

Lopetegui told El Pais: "Diego had a very good game against Belgium. He was focused with and without the ball. He played with a lot of energy and concentration.

"The feeling I got is that he was enjoying himself on the pitch, and that is always important. He is a player that we like.

"A striker can have a great game without scoring."

On Monday, AS said Costa would be determined to break what it called his "jinx" with Spain.

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara is also set to play a key role after working his way back into the starting XI.

He did not start any of Spain's Euro 2016 games but was in the lineup in Belgium is expected to start against Lichtenstein.

"He is a player that we know well from the youth teams and who has our complete trust," Lopetegui said.

"He wants to continue to learn and improve. He has the gene that great players have, and that is important because it allows you to continue to improve."
