Aleix Vidal injured in Spain debut, doubtful to face Belarus

New Barcelona signing Aleix Vidal injured his ankle during his debut for Spain in Thursday's 2-1 friendly win over Costa Rica and now looks unlikely to make the trip for Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Belarus.

Vidal, 25, joined Barca from Sevilla last week in a surprise deal for an initial fee of €18 million, while knowing he is unlikely to be able to make his Blaugrana debut until January 2016 due to the Catalan club's FIFA-imposed transfer ban.

The versatile Catalan played his first senior international in Thursday's game in Leon, starting on the right wing and played a role in Spain's equaliser scored by Cesc Fabregas, before being replaced at half-time by his former Sevilla colleague Vitolo after suffering a reported sprained ankle when falling awkwardly after an aerial challenge.

Speaking after the game, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque confirmed there was an issue, but said it was too early yet to predict whether Vidal would be available to face Belarus.

"[Vidal] has a problem with his ankle," Del Bosque said. "I do not know if he will come with us or not, it depends on the doctors."

Spain are currently second in Group C, three points behind group leaders Slovakia, and three ahead of third placed Ukraine.
