PSL wrap: Kaizer Chiefs held in league opener

Kaizer Chiefs let a lead slip in Bloemfontein in their Premier League opener on Sunday to mount more pressure on coach Steve Komphela.

The Amakhosi were desperate for a good start following last weekend's first round MTN8 Cup exit, and got it early on against Celtic when Erick Mathoho headed home from a free-kick.

However, Lorenzo Gordinho's handball in the 75th minute allowed Atusaye Nyondo a chance to equalize from the spot, and the Malawian made no mistake from the spot.

In the day's other game, Maritzburg United maintained their good start under Fadlu Davids, netting two late goals to see off Platinum Stars. Siphesihle Ndlovu created both, with Deolin Mekoa scoring in the in the 75th minute before Lebohang Maboe made sure of the points on the stroke of fulltime.

On Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns again got the better of SuperSport United in the Tshwane Derby. Hlompho Kekana and Themba Zwane scored either side of halftime in a dominant display by the Brazilians, while Matsatsantsa finished with 10 men as former national team captain Dean Furman got sent off.

In Soweto, there was a winning start for Milutin Sredojevic upon his return to Orlando Pirates. After their struggles last season, a good start was crucial for the Buccaneers against Chippa United and, although the performance was far from impressive, Thamsanqa Gabuza's first half goal was enough for the three points.

Elsewhere, AmaZulu celebrated their return to the top-flight with a 1-0 win against Free State Stars, courtesy of Tapelo Nyongo's late penalty, while Polokwane City and Baroka FC played out a goalless draw.

In Cape Town, Rivaldo Coetzee scored just after the break for Ajax after Lerato Lamola had given Golden Arrows a first half lead, while Cape Town City beat defending champions Bidvest Wits 1-0 on Friday night.
