Mamelodi Sundowns crash out of Telkom Knockout

Mamelodi Sundowns have been dumped out of the Telkom Knockout after a 1-0 loss to Chippa United in East London on Sunday.

In the other first-round match, holders Cape Town City are also out after they went down 1-0 at Baroka FC as the woes for their new coach Benni McCarthy continue.

For Sundowns, it is now four defeats in their last five matches in all competitions and there is plenty of soul-searching for their coach Pitso Mosimane after another limp display.

They created only half-chances against a Chippa side who deserved their first-ever victory over the Brazilians in what is also their first win in the Telkom Knockout competition at the fifth attempt.

The only goal of the game was scored by Samuel Julies, a former Sundowns player, who will have enjoyed the moment more than most after having seen limited opportunities at Chloorkop in the past.

In Polokwane, Baroka kept up their good start to the season with victory over struggling City as Zimbabwean Talent Chawapiwa scored a fine goal from the edge of the box.

City are now winless in their last four matches and also lost the MTN8 final a fortnight ago, ensuring the honeymoon is well and truly over for McCarthy.

The draw for the quarter finals took place as well on Sunday and sees Kaizer Chiefs travel to Chippa United.

Orlando Pirates host Polokwane City, Platinum Stars hosts Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits will entertain Baroka FC.

Those matches will be played this coming weekend, with the exact dates, times and venues to be announced by the PSL shortly.
