SA's Van Wyk announces Houston Dash departure

South Africa national team captain Janine van Wyk said on Twitter Monday that "her time has come to an end" with National Women's Soccer League side Houston Dash.

Van Wyk made 37 appearances in two NWSL seasons at Dash, and this campaign, under the leadership of former South Africa coach Vera Pauw, featured alongside compatriots Linda Motlhalo and Thembi Kgatlana.

"And so, my journey with the Houston Dash has come to an end. It's been a year that has taught me many lessons," Van Wyk said via her Twitter account.

"Thanks to everyone that has been on this journey with me. You will always be remembered when I think of one of my most memorable experiences in football."

Van Wyk, the most capped South African footballer of all time with 149 national team appearances, will now likely focus on her own club team in South Africa, as well as the girls league in Gauteng she has helped set up.

It could still be a big year for the 31-year-old though, as she will lead Banyana Banyana to the African Women's Championship in Ghana in November, where they will hope to finish in the top three and qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup in France next year.

South Africa have never been to the global showpiece event before.
