Orlando Pirates claimed a first victory of the season with a narrow 1-0 success away at Chippa United in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, despite finishing the game with 10 men. Pirates claimed all three points thanks to an own goal from Chippa defender Gaona Modisane, who put the ball into his own net after Zambian international Justin Shonga had seen his free-kick crash back off the crossbar. Pirates were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes remaining when fullback Mthokozisi Dube received a second yellow card for time-wasting, but the visitors were able to hold on for the win. Steve Komphela continued his dream start with Bloemfontein Celtic as the former Kaizer Chiefs coach led his side to a 2-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows for a full haul of six points from their opening two games of the season. Tshegofatso Mabaso and Kabelo Dlamini scored goals in each half for Celtic, who look set to be sold this month after owner Max Tshabalala found a local buyer for the cash-strapped club. Two wins from two will also boost the mood of the squad on the pitch and be welcome relief for Komphela, who endured a torrid time towards the end of his stay at Naturena. SuperSport United claimed a first win of the season as they edged AmaZulu 1-0 thanks to an own goal from defender Xolani Silawuli. It was a welcome relief for coach Kaitano Tembo after his side was well-beaten in their season opener at Cape Town City, while there was a place on the bench for Zambian youngster Gamphani Lungu. Two first half goals helped Baroka FC to beat fancied Cape Town City in Polokwane as they grabbed the lead through a pair of headers from Mpho Kgaswane and Matome Kgoetyane. City pulled a goal back early in the second period through Siphelele Mthembu, his first for the club, but they could not force an equaliser. Free State Stars edged Maritzburg United 2-1, inflicting a second defeat of the campaign on the KwaZulu-Natal side. After a goalless first half, Congo striker Harris Tchilimbou converted from the penalty spot for Stars, before Goodman Dlamini added a late second. By that time the visitors were down to 10 men after a second booking for key midfielder Fortune Makaringe, but they did pull a late goal back through loan signing from Mamelodi Sundowns, Keletso Makgalwa.
