Top two clash in big weekend in the South African Premiership

There could be another twist in this most intriguing of South African Premier Soccer League seasons on Friday night when Cape Town City host Mamelodi Sundowns at Athlone Stadium.

It is second versus first in the league, and victory for the home side would move them to within a single point of Sundowns, who had looked at one stage as though they would run away with the title. A City league title is certainly not unthinkable, they might have done it in their maiden season in 2016/17 but for some points dropped in the early part of the campaigns in games they would have won comfortably.

They will be without suspended coach Benni McCarthy on the bench, though, as he sits out the second game of a two-match ban, but could feature new signing Matthew Rusike just 48 hours after he arrived at the club.

City are a pretty side to watch, as create chances in games, but have lacked the finishing touch this campaign. Just 20 goals scored in 19 games is a poor return for a side that is second in the league, but also shows how good they have been defensively.

They have tried to change that in the January transfer window with the acquisitions of Rusike, Ugandan winger Allan Kateregga and Kenyan forward Masoud Juma, with Nigerian forward Victor Obinna yet to hit his straps.

On the other side, Sundowns certainly do have plenty of firepower and it will be a quick return for winger Aubrey Ngoma to Cape Town after he left City for The Brazilians in the last transfer window.

City have beaten Sundowns in all three previous meetings between the clubs, a remarkable record, and Ngoma knows more than most what it took to get those victories.

"I think what helped us consistently beat Sundowns was the team spirit that we had," Ngoma was quoted by IOL. "We were driven to beat the so-called big teams and make a name for ourselves, especially since we were a new and small club.

"It's not that we planned differently for Sundowns but the drive and dedication was always high against them. We wanted to beat the former African champions which is a big deal and is why we gave 150 percent effort against them."

Ngoma says that although he is now a Sundowns man, he has much to thank City for.

"I have mixed-feelings about this game. I don't even know what I will do should I score. My reaction will be whatever comes naturally, in terms of whether I celebrate or not. It will be driven by what I feel at that moment. I have fond memories of my time at Cape Town City," he said.

"They took my football to the next level and I grew as a person and as a player in my time there. My proudest moment was when we won the Telkom Knockout in our first season. But I have to move on, now I am at Sundowns and if I am given the chance I will look to help the team break the spell Cape Town City have over us."

It is not the only big game of the weekend, though, at a time of the season where every round of matches are crucial at both ends of the table.

Kaizer Chiefs travel to improving BidVest Wits on Saturday evening hoping to keep their championship charge alive, but come up against a Clever Boys side that has seemingly turned the corner with 10 points taken from the last 12 available.

Wits coach Gavin Hunt has suggested that his side could be kingmakers this season with them having to play all the top teams still, and he might well be right, possibly starting this weekend.

"One thing is for sure‚ we'll determine who wins the league because we still have to play all these teams‚" Hunt told reporters. "We might not do it but we've got the capacity to beat everybody. You can't expect to win every game and the top team isn't dominating every game.

"So this league is very close in terms of top to bottom. It doesn't make me feel better because we can't win the league.

"It's going to be tight if it goes to the wire because there's no consistency. This time last year we were hitting a run and we were on two points per game and the current leaders aren't even on two points per game. It looks like less than 60 points can win the league this season."

Orlando Pirates host in-form Maritzburg United later that same evening, smarting from a 3-0 loss to Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday in which they dominated possession.

What is for sure now is that they need to start winning again if they are to have any hope of winning the title.

Ailing SuperSport United have been sucked into the relegation mix over the last month as they play catch-up football from their African Confederation Cup campaign last year and almost incredibly sit just one point above the drop-zone.

They host tricky Bloemfontein Celtic having managed just a single win in their last 13 matches, putting coach Eric Tinkler under severe pressure.

Free State Stars host Baroka FC, while AmaZulu and Lamontville Golden Arrows clash in a Durban Derby as both teams try to stay above the relegation scrap.

There are also two matches on Sunday as improving Ajax travel across the country to face Polokwane City and Chippa United host bottom club Platinum Stars.
