Mamelodi Sundowns took a pragmatic approach to Saturday's much-anticipated clash with Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa's Premier Soccer League, and were satisfied with the point garnered in the goalless draw, said coach Pitso Mosimane.
"We were not as expansive as we usually are because we showed respect to Chiefs," he told the post-match press conference, before he drew comparisons with boxer Floyd Mayweather.
"I looked at him fighting sometimes and he didn't have to go toe-to-toe with everybody. But he retired undefeated."
Mosimane said they were wary of Chiefs tactical formation, with three centre backs, plus the threat on the flanks of veteran midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala.
Some 70 000 at Soccer city watched the match which kept Sundowns five points ahead of Chiefs in the standings. Sundowns are leaders and Chiefs among three clubs in second place.
"It might come back and bite us, getting a draw here at Chiefs, but you can't say we didn't try and go forward. Sometimes you play it like that," said Mosimane.
"You saw Liverpool all out against Swansea and they lost. Man City went toe-to-toe against Liverpool at Anfield and lost. They could have played it differently and taken a point from that game.
"Who are we to try and win all the games? Sometimes the wins aren't coming. I'm happy with the point. We play like this when we compete in the Champions League and that's why we have a star on top of our badge."
Sundowns next take on Cape Town City, another of the challengers, away on Friday and will likely to also adopt cautious tactics at the Athlone Stadium.
"We are trying to win a championship here. This was a big game. If you look after the process then the outcome will sort it self out," Mosimane added.
