Kaizer Chiefs take strikers on trial this week

Premier Soccer League giants Kaizer Chiefs will trial two forwards this week as they seek to find a solution to their scoring woes of last term.

Chiefs are seeking a partner for the impressive Venezuelan Gustavo Paez, and have turned to Argentine trialist Jonathan Philippe and South African Darren Lurie.

The duo will seek to catch the eye of coach Steve Komphela this week having started their trial on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old Philippe was most recently with Greek second-tier side Agrotikos Asteras‚ where he scored nine goals in 34 appearances last season‚ a figure boosted by a last day hat-trick.

He was developed through the famous Buenos Aires side Boca Juniors‚ but only made a single appearance for them‚ and later went on to play for América de Cali (Colombia)‚ Argentino de Quilmes and Alianza FC (El Salvador)‚ among others.

He has also played in Switzerland and Paraguay.

The appearance of 25-year-old Lurie at training was more of a surprise. He previously featured for Moroka Swallows (2013/14) and Mpumalanga Black Aces (2014/15), but made a total of six substitute appearances in the two seasons with the clubs.

He started last campaign with Hapoel Afula in the Israeli second division, but after scoring on debut, made just two more substitute appearances.

Chiefs have already bolstered their forward line with the signing of Bongolethu Jayiya (Cape Town City)‚ as well as midfielder Philani Zulu (Maritzburg United) and defender Teenage Hadebe (Chicken Inn‚ Zimbabwe).
