Mamelodi Sundowns have faltered in their Premiership title charge of late with just a single point from their last two games ahead of a potentially explosive clash against Orlando Pirates on Sunday.

With only four matches remaining in the season, another slip-up against the woefully inconsistent Buccaneers could spell disaster for coach Pitso Mosimane in the defence of the league title.

KweséESPN takes a trip down memory lane to select five classic clashes between these two South African giants:

1993: Sundowns 3-2 Pirates
Sundowns ended up winning the South African league title in 1993, finishing three points ahead of second-placed Moroka Swallows. How crucial then was this five-goal thriller with Ernest Chirwali scoring what proved the winner late on.

Tall striker Phil Masinga and Sizwe Motaung scored the other goals for Sundowns, with the latter netting an own goal in favour of Pirates as well. Congolese striker Etienne Nsunda got the other goal for The Buccaneers.

A great game and a vital result, in the end, for Sundowns.

1997/98: Pirates 2-2 Sundowns
This clash was the first leg of the League Cup semifinal and proved a see-saw thriller. Nigerian Raphael Chukwu had Sundowns ahead midway through the opening period, but by halftime, it was Pirates who hit the front.

Andries Sebola and Bruce Ramokhadi got on the score sheet for the Buccaneers, while Sundowns striker Daniel Mudau had a goal ruled out.

It looked as though Pirates would hold on for the win, but in the dying seconds of the game Page Mahlangu found an equaliser for The Brazilians.

The teams tightened up for the second game that finished 0-0, with Sundowns advancing to the final on the away goals rule and lost to Kaizer Chiefs.

1999/00: Sundowns 3-3 Pirates
Another clash which swung first one way then the other, ending up all square in a season in which Sundowns took the league title and Pirates finished second.

Sundowns led 2-0 midway through the first half with two goals in three minutes from Alain Amougou and Daniel Mudau.

Pirates drew level before the break through Phumlani Mkhize and Joseph Ngake. And, the Buccaneers completed the turnaround when they led on 52 minutes thanks to Thabo Mngomeni.

But just three minutes later Sundowns drew level at 3-3 when Issac Shai found the back of the net.

2011/12: Pirates 3-2 Sundowns
An MTN8 semifinal, first leg, with plenty of twists and turns as Pirates edged their rivals thanks to a late penalty from Bongani Ndulula that came in the third minute of injury-time.

Pirates had hit the front on six minutes when Thulasizwe Mbuyane netted, but two quick goals from the visitors turned the tie on its head as Katlego Mphela and Musa Nyatama had them in front before the 20-minute mark.

Pirates battled to break through but found an equaliser with 11 minutes to go through Tlou Segolela; before Ndulula's late show won the day.

The second leg finished 1-1, with Pirates defeating Kaizer Chiefs in the final.

2016/17: Sundowns 6-0 Pirates
Not such a great game if you are a Pirates fan, but a historic result that inflicted the worst defeat in professional football on Pirates in their 80-year history.

Buccaneers fans thought their 6-1 drubbing at the hands of SuperSport United earlier in the campaign was as low as they could possibly sink, but their same frailties in defence came back to haunt them again.

Themba Zwane and Percy Tau had Sundowns in a 2-0 halftime lead, before the wheels came off in the second period as Ricardo Nascimento (penalty), Thapelo Morena (two) and Tau netted.

The match was also notable for a pitch invasion from angry Pirates fans, but the game was able to be completed.
