Manchester United have triggered an option in David De Gea's contract that will keep him at the club until 2020, sources have told ESPN FC. The goalkeeper's deal was set to expire in the summer but United have taken up their option to extend it for another 12 months. Negotiations are underway about a new long-term contract for De Gea, who arrived at Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011. Jose Mourinho said following the 1-0 win over Young Boys on Tuesday the 28-year-old is keen to stay but sources have told ESPN FC that progress has been slow. De Gea, who saw a move to Real Madrid collapse in 2015, has just one Premier League title to show for his seven-and-a-half years at United andhas never been beyond the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The Spain international, who has attracted interest from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, has been named the club's player of the year in four of the last five seasons, and Mourinho urged the board on Tuesday to push the boat out to keep a goalkeeper he described as "the best in the world." "If our ambitions are to be a big club, to be a winning club, you need the best goalkeeper in the world," he said. "In this case, we have the best goalkeeper in the world and I know that he wants to stay. "I know that his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay and they're working on that, so hopefully sooner or later they arrive into good conclusions."
