Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose distracted by transfer talk - Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has said some players, including Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose, were distracted by transfer speculation over the summer.

Defender Alderweireld was a reported target for Manchester United, although no approach was made, but the Belgium international would be available for £25 million next summer and could be sold to an overseas club in the coming weeks.

Rose, meanwhile, has been in talks with European clubs about a loan move.

"All are in different places mentally," Pochettino said as he prepared for Spurs' Premier League opener at Newcastle this weekend.

"There's a lot of rumours and it's normal that, if you appear on the TV and in the media, it's impossible not to be affected a little bit by the rumours because in some moments you don't know if it's true or not true.

"Players like Toby or Danny Rose, they called me all through the World Cup and yesterday we were talking. We need to deal with that and help the players to be in a very good shape and then to help the team.

"But I am not worried. If [they are] not [ready] this week, then it's next week, or maybe the week after. It's so long, the season. There's a lot of games to play and I hope that all will be fit and help the team to achieve what we want."

Nine Spurs players took part in the World Cup semifinals and only returned to training on Monday, with Pochettino assessing their readiness ahead of the Newcastle trip.

But he said France captain Hugo Lloris was raring to go after winning the World Cup.

"For sure Hugo is ready to play," he added. "It's difficult to manage him, eh? You cannot talk to him in the same way as before. Now he says: 'I am World Cup champion!'

"No, it's unbelievable because he's so humble. We have the Golden Boot winner too in Harry [Kane], who is so disappointed because he said to me: 'I should have scored more goals.'

"But it's good that they feel that we are all together, the same team as last season, and we can all fight for big things and show to everyone that we have a very good squad and very good team, and the players can still improve."
