Arsenal send goalkeeper Matt Macey on loan to Plymouth Argyle

Arsenal have sent goalkeeper Matt Macey out on loan to League One club Plymouth Argyle for the upcoming season.

The 23-year-old Macey was the third-choice goalkeeper under Arsene Wenger last season and made his first two appearances for the club, playing against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League and Norwich in the Carabao Cup.

However, he never looked close to challenging Petr Cech or David Ospina for regular playing time and has fallen further back in the pecking order following the signing of Bernd Leno and the return of Emiliano Martinez from a loan spell.

It's Macey's third loan move since joining the Arsenal academy in 2013, having had previous stints at Accrington Stanley and Luton Town.

The move makes it more likely that Martinez will serve as the third-choice keeper this season behind Cech and Leno, with Ospina widely expected to be sold.
