PSG doubled Manchester City's wage offer to Dani Alves - source

Dani Alves turned his back on an agreement to join Manchester City after Paris Saint-Germain offered to double what the Premier League club had agreed to pay him, a source has told ESPN FC.

Alves, 34, had verbally agreed a two-year deal to be reunited with his former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola at City but is now set to sign a contract with Ligue 1 side PSG worth around £12 million a year.

City were unwilling to match the salary package, which would have made him one of the best paid players at the Etihad Stadium.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Guardiola is furious over Alves' late U-turn after allowing the player extra time off following his wedding on Saturday.

He was due to arrive in Manchester this week for his medical and to sign a contract before being part of the squad heading on the preseason tour to the United States.

City do at least hope to have at least one new full-back on the tour with progress being made in their pursuit of Monaco's Benjamin Mendy and a deal could be announced soon.

They also remain confident of agreeing a deal for Tottenham Hotspur's Kyle Walker, who was set to be the club's first-choice right-back even before Alves's dramatic late snub.

But they are expected to bring in at least one other full-back after allowing Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy to leave on free transfers at the end of last season.

Aleksandar Kolarov is the only senior full-back in the first-team squad while young Spanish full-back Pablo Maffeo will be part of the tour to the United States.
