Espanyol aim to retain Diego Lopez, Diego Reyes next season

Espanyol chief executive Ramon Robert has said that his club are working on keeping Mexico international defender Diego Reyes and Spanish goalkeeper Diego Lopez beyond this summer.

Reyes and Lopez joined Espanyol on season-long loans last summer from Porto and AC Milan, respectively, and have been key players in helping the La Liga outfit remain in the top half of the standings.

Espanyol hold an option to acquire Reyes outright after this season for a reported €7 million.

"Our intention is for Diego Reyes and Diego Lopez to remain," Robert said as reported in Marca. "We will not do anything crazy but we will do all that we can for them to continue."

Reyes, contracted to FC Porto until June 2018, arrived at Espanyol after making 28 appearances in all competitions while on loan at La Liga side Real Sociedad in the 2015-16 campaign.

The 24-year-old has made 27 league starts for the Barcelona-based club.

Lopez has also had a starring role with Espanyol.

The former Real Madrid keeper returned to La Liga last summer after losing his starting place at AC Milan to then 16-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma early in the 2015-16 campaign.

The 35-year-old has kept 11 clean sheets in 30 league starts to help Espanyol climb to ninth in the standings with five games remaining.

Lopez, tied to the Rossoneri until June 2018, spoke earlier this year about his desire to remain with the Catalan outfit.

"It's no secret that Diego Lopez wants to stay and that we want him to continue," Robert said. "We have to wait and see what happens with Milan and with the change of ownership.

"Our intention is for him to remain, the same as with Reyes."

Espanyol, owned by Chinese company Rastar Group, are coached by Quique Sanchez Flores.

They play at Sporting Gijon on Tuesday before hosting La Liga leaders Barcelona in the city derby on Saturday.
