Manchester City targeting Tottenham's Danny Rose - source

Danny Rose remains one of Manchester City's top targets as they plan a major summer overhaul, a source has told ESPN FC.

City boss Pep Guardiola is set to make big changes to his first-team squad with the defence set for the most extensive revamp.

The club are expected to bring in at least two full-backs in the summer with current options Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Aleksander Kolarov all in their 30s. The first three of those players out of contract at the end of the season and have not yet been offered new deals.

Tottenham left-back Rose was identified as a replacement after becoming a key member of Mauricio Pochettino's side that went close to winning the Premier League side last season.

The 26-year-old's impressive form has continued this season, and a club source has told ESPN FC that Spurs are not worried by the interest and have no intention of selling the defender.

Rose also signed a new five-year deal with Spurs in September that ties him to the club until 2021.

City are short of homegrown players and Rose is seen as one of a limited number of possibilities good enough to walk into a squad that wants to compete in the Premier League and Champions League. Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin was also a target but the Spanish youngster signed a six-year contract with the Gunners in November.

City are also expected to bring in a new midfielder and ESPN FC has also been told that they are monitoring Ivan Rakitic's future at Barcelona.

The Croatia international has started just two of Barca's eight last matches prompting rumours that he would be sold to City in January.

Rakitic has praised boss Luis Enrique but his future remains in doubt with Barca reportedly needing to sell players to finance a new contract for Lionel Messi. And if the Liga side do decide to cash in on the midfielder, City would be seen as a viable option for the 28-year-old.

Asked before Barca's Champions League game at the Etihad Stadium in November if he'd like to play under Guardiola, Rakitic said he is a big fan of the Catalan coach.

"It would be fantastic to work with him one day and if not I'll invite him for a coffee," he said.
