Lyon's Mathieu Valbuena dismisses Fenerbahce transfer speculation

Lyon winger Mathieu Valbuena has rejected rumours that he is lining up a switch to Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Valbuena, 31, endured a difficult first season at Lyon after being the victim of an alleged blackmail attempt that resulted in his former France teammate Karim Benzema being charged last November.

Injuries and a loss of form also contributed to Valbuena being left out of France's Euro 2016 squad and last week reports in Russia linked the former Dynamo Moscow man with a move away from Lyon.

Speaking after Lyon's 3-2 friendly win over Benfica on Sunday, however, Valbuena said the suggestion that he was seeking a fresh start with Fenerbahce was very much wide of the mark.

"The press are talking for nothing -- it's ridiculous," he told Canal Plus. "I'm at Lyon and I'm 100 percent [invested] in the project. I have two years left here. I feel good."

Valbuena scored one goal in 26 matches last season as Lyon finished runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.

Club president Jean-Michel Aulas is hopeful that the former Marseille player will become more influential now that he has committed his future to Lyon.

"It's very good news," Aulas said of Valbuena's comments. "He's an excellent player, a model teammate and a great professional.

"If he didn't have a worry with his private life, I think he would have played in the Euros. I'm pleased that he's here because he's a leader.

"If we want to get closer to Paris Saint-Germain, we'll need a lot of good players and he's one of them. I have high hopes for him."
