Borussia Dortmund announce Henrikh Mkhitaryan is to join Man United

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan will sign for Manchester United, subject to a medical.

Mkhitaryan, 27, had one year left on his Dortmund contract, but United sealed the transfer after an improved bid was accepted.

Dortmund announced the news on Saturday, stating that they finally agreed to let the Armenia international go after intensive discussions with their player.

"Manchester United have made us a tremendously valuable offer. Had we rejected it, the player would be able to leave for free in 2017," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a club statement.

The German club added in the statement: "Borussia Dortmund wishes Henrikh Mkhitaryan all the best for the coming season in both the Premier League and in the UEFA Europa League."

The midfielder was brought to the Bundesliga by former Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp for a fee of €27.5 million in 2013, joining from the Ukrainian league where he had spent three years at Shakhtar Donetsk and one season with Metalurg Donetsk.

During his two years under Klopp he scored 12 goals and set up 15. And Mkhitaryan was one of the stand-out players in German football again last season, scoring 11 goals and producing 20 assists as he flourished under the guidance of head coach Thomas Tuchel.

The Armenia international will become United manager Jose Mourinho's third signing of the summer following the recruitment of defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer.
