Jose Mourinho will target Everton's John Stones - source

Jose Mourinho will revive his long-held interest in Everton's John Stones upon taking over at Manchester United, sources close to negotiations have told ESPN FC, as part of a plan to overhaul the first XI.

The Portuguese, who is expected to be officially confirmed by the club shortly, wants to bring in two defenders, a commanding central midfielder, a fast winger to facilitate rapid counter-attacks and a striker.

ESPN FC has previously reported that Mourinho is also a huge admirer of Harry Kane, and wants United to at least try and test Tottenham Hotspur's stance on the player, even if there is a growing acceptance he wants to stay at White Hart Lane to work with Mauricio Pochettino.

The 53-year-old Mourinho has already expressed his approval at signing free agent Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with sources saying that deal is expected to develop this week.

It is Stones who is currently Mourinho's most clearly defined target, although he is set to face strong opposition from Manchester City -- since Pep Guardiola is also highly keen on the 21-year-old -- and his old club Chelsea.

Stones is contracted to Everton until 2019, however, meaning the Goodison Park club are likely to prove very difficult to negotiate with. If Mourinho cannot do a deal for Stones, he will prioritise Real Madrid's Raphael Varane, although he might even seek to buy the player while pursuing a deal for the Everton centre-half anyway.

Club sources have also stated that Manchester United are interested in a deal for James Rodriguez, but will run the idea past Mourinho once he takes the job.
