Joel Sonora of U.S. under-20s signs to play for Stuttgart reserves

United States under-20 midfielder Joel Sonora has joined the reserve team of Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart.

Sonora, 19, had left the Boca Juniors youth system earlier this month with an eye to move to Europe, and he completed his deal with Stuttgart on Friday.

"We've had a closer look at Joel during two longer trials, and are convinced of his skills," said Stuttgart reserves coach Walter Thomae.

"Through his technique and his shot skills, he adds important elements to our attacking game. But right now, it is important that he settles in here and adjusts his game to German football."

Sonora played for the U.S. at the Under-20 World Cup last year, playing in four games and missing a penalty in the shootout defeat to eventual winners Serbia.

He had been with the Argentine giants since 2012.

His father Diego Sonora played for Boca Juniors and also spent five seasons in Major League Soccer.
