Jonjo Shelvey signs for Newcastle United from Swansea

Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City for an undisclosed fee.

Shelvey, 23, has agreed a five-and-a-half-year contract with Premier League strugglers Newcastle for a fee reported to be £12 million.

The midfielder follows the capture of Bordeaux's Henri Saivet, who also penned a five and a half-year contract at St James' Park on Monday.

"I'm very excited to be here. I'm so glad that it's finally done," Shelvey told the club's official website. "I drove up through the night to be here so it's been a manic 24 hours but it's all been worth it to come here and play for this great club."

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren added: "I'm delighted to welcome Jonjo to Newcastle United.

"He has great experience for a young English central midfielder and is a current England international, so I'm certain he will be a great addition to the squad.

"He is a player we have admired for some time and we're very pleased that we've now been able to bring him here."

The England international joined Swansea from Liverpool in 2013 and made 79 league appearances for the Welsh club, scoring 10 goals.

Newcastle are currently 18th in the table, two points behind 17th-placed Swansea, while they host Manchester United on Tuesday night.
