Liverpool's Lazar Markovic set for Fenerbahce loan - sources

Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic is set to join Turkish club Fenerbahce on a season's loan, sources have told ESPN FC.

Manager Brendan Rodgers hopes the move will allow the 21-year-old to develop into a player capable of succeeding at Anfield, sources said.

Markovic does still have a first-team future at Liverpool, as the Anfield club are not looking to sell him.

The Serbia international has had a slow start to his career on Merseyside, but is seen as a long-term prospect by the Reds' manager.

Markovic moved to Liverpool from Benfica for £20 million in July 2014, but made just 11 Premier League starts last season, scoring twice.

The lowest point of his season came in December when he was controversially sent off during Liverpool's 1-1 draw at home to Basel, a result that saw the Reds eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage.

Markovic was used only sparingly in preseason, and the Reds believe that the loan move will enable him to get more matches.

Fenerbahce are expected to pay his £50,000-a-week salary for the duration of the deal, and will also pay Liverpool a loan fee.
