Southampton say Sadio Mane 'not for sale' after Man Utd bid

Southampton have maintained that midfielder Sadio Mane is not for sale, after sources told ESPN FC that Manchester United made a bid last week.

Mane, 24, cost Southampton £11.8 million when he joined from Salzburg last summer and his form last season -- when he scored 11 goals in 35 games -- led to a surprise approach from the Red Devils.

United have ended their interest in Barcelona attacker Pedro after manager Louis van Gaal decided not to activate his £22m release clause, but the club had already contacted Southampton about the Senegalese winger before they made that decision.

However, Southampton are not keen to let Mane leave and have played down the chances of him departing this window.

"He is a key part of our team and our planning for the future. He wouldn't be sold," a club official told Sky Sports News.

Van Gaal has stated he wants to add speed and creativity to his squad, especially after the sale of record signing Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain for £44m.

Southampton have had a profitable relationship with United after selling them Luke Shaw last year for £27m and Morgan Schneiderlin this summer for a further £25m.

Mane was prolific in Austria before he arrived in the Premier League and scored 45 goals in 87 games for Salzburg.
