Van Gaal hints that Manchester United need to sign Pedro from Barcelona

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has suggested that the club need to sign a player in the mould of Barcelona forward Pedro.

The Spain international, who has a £22 million release clause in his contract at the Camp Nou, is a target for United.

Van Gaal believes the Old Trafford club need more attacking options if they are to win the Premier League.

He told The Sun: "Barcelona have the speed of Neymar and [Lionel] Messi -- and they have Pedro behind them. We have to compete with that.

"We can win the title if we can buy players with speed and creativity. We have to improve our selection in that way.

"Bayern Munich have [Franck] Ribery and [Arjen] Robben. After that they can change with [Thomas] Muller and they also had [Xherdan] Shaqiri at times.

"They are our competitors. Chelsea have [Eden] Hazard, Willian, Oscar -- that is speed and creativity."

United have parted company with two forwards this summer, with Van Gaal opting not to buy on-loan Radamel Falcao and selling Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce.

In addition, they could lose record buy Angel Di Maria with Paris Saint-Germain saying they are "close" to signing the £59.7 million winger.

United's only attacking signing so far this summer has been £25 million Netherlands international Memphis Depay.

Pedro scored 11 goals for Barcelona last season but lost his place in their strongest side after the arrival of Luis Suarez.
