Rafa Benitez says Sergio Ramos will stay at Real Madrid

Rafael Benitez was coy about rumours surrounding unsettled Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, but was confident captain Sergio Ramos and striker Karim Benzema will remain at Real Madrid, amid reports linking the pair with English clubs.

Ramos is reportedly at the centre of a tug of war between the Spanish giants and Manchester United, with rumours suggesting the defender wants a switch to the Premier League.

Madrid have been at pains to knock back suggestions one of the star players will be leaving the Bernabeu and Benitez has reiterated the club's stance.

Speaking after the 4-1 International Champions Cup win over Manchester City in Melbourne, the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Inter Milan boss told reporters: "Sergio has known from day one that I want him to stay and I'm sure that he'll stay with us.''

Ramos, asked by reporters in the mixed zone following the match as to when he plans to speak, limited himself to saying: "now there is less time."

Benitez would not be drawn about any plans for De Gea.

"I don't know. He is not here and I don't know," Benitez said. "I don't speak to [Manchester United manager Louis] Van Gaal every day. At each match we have a goalkeeper in each goal and with that I am satisfied."

Benitez was also optimistic of Benzema remaining in the Spanish capital, despite reported interest from Arsenal.

Benitez added: "People are asking me about different players that maybe we will buy and I always say the same thing, 'he's not our player, I will not talk about that.'

"In this case Karim is our player so I will not talk about that. I hope, I'm sure, that he will stay with us.''

Benzema opened the scoring at the MCG before goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe gave Madrid a 3-0 lead over City, who pulled one back on the stroke of half-time.

Real winger Denis Cheryshev added Real's fourth with 15 minutes to go to complete a comfortable win and one that satisfied Benitez.

"Although we're in preseason, it's always positive to see the team perform like this,'' he said. "We put in a very good game both in attack and in defence.''

"In the end it's the fine details that make the difference, and today we saw a team with high-quality players who played with good organisation.

"We're a team that are going to score goals. We have to attack and make that slight improvement in defence that we need.''

Benitez stated that there is nothing between him and Ronaldo, who scored the second goal of the game and was named man of the match in front of the 99,382 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

"I think that people were talking about something that happened in a training session," said Benitez, "but you could see today he is happy, he is playing well and I am really pleased because he is scoring goals and winning man of the match.

"Everything is fine. In football you know you have to just concentrate on the future and the future is quite positive."
