Bournemouth target Demerai Gray commits to new Birmingham contract

Birmingham midfielder Demarai Gray has signed a new three-year contract with the club.

Gray has been the subject of multiple bids from Premier League newcomers Bournemouth, who it is reported made a fresh offer for the teenager last month.

It has also been reported that Liverpool have a contractual right to match any fee for either Gray or fellow Blues youngster Reece Brown under the terms of Jordon Ibe's loan to City last season.

Gray was into the final 12 months of his previous deal but he has now put pen to paper for a further two years until the summer of 2018.

Birmingham boss Gary Rowett told the club's official website: "From the minute I walked into the club again, you could tell he was a special talent.

"The big thing for me is that he is so sensible, he has got such a mature head on his shoulders.

"He knows what he wants to do. He knows that one day he wants to play in the Premier League and I think he knows that if he keeps working hard on his game and keeps improving, keeps listening to people, then he can do that.

"He came back probably more focused this season. He came back slightly different physically, he looks a little bit bigger, he looks a little bit taller.

"And I just think to get him on a longer term contract just gives him that little more of a settled situation so he can play his football better.

"We didn't want him to enter into the last year of contract and knowing we could have a year where he is not settled, he ends up moving potentially for nothing abroad, or moves on via a tribunal.

"We just wanted to give him the chance to give his best for the team, and that's what he's wanted too.

"I think he is looking at another season where hopefully he gets 40-odd games and advances again.

"I'm really, really looking forward to working with him once more and I would think -- without being disrespectful to anyone -- it is our biggest signing of the summer so far, a fantastic deal for us."

The 19-year-old made his breakthrough into the Birmingham first team during the 2014-15 campaign, scoring six league goals in 41 Championship appearances.
