Orlando City in talks for Man United's Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez

Orlando City are in talks to sign Manchester United's Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, the Major League Soccer club's owner has said.

Flavio Augusto da Silva said he is negotiating to take Mexico international Hernandez to Florida, but believes he faces competition from several other MLS clubs.

Hernandez, who only has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, is expected to leave United this summer and Orlando hope to tie up a deal for the striker.

"Regarding Chicharito, of course he's a great player that every club in the world would love to have and we'd love the chance to have him," Augusto da Silva said in quotes reported by the Orlando Sentinel.

"Right now we don't have anything done, and you know during the process of negotiations -- where many clubs have interest, including us, because why not -- the less we talk about it the better. So we'll see if there is a possibility and then we'll move forward."

He added: "We hope in one or two weeks to be ready to talk about Chicharito in a different way."

Hernandez will not go on United's preseason tour of America as he recovers from a broken collarbone and his departure would exacerbate their striker shortage, with the former Premier League champions choosing not to buy Radamel Falcao after his unsuccessful loan spell and with Robin van Persie joining Fenerbahce.

The Mexican was loaned to Real Madrid last season but, although he scored nine goals in 33 games for the 10-time European champions, they decided not to sign him on a long-term deal.

The 27-year-old, who joined United for £6.9 million from Guadalajara, was named their Player of the Year in his debut campaign at Old Trafford.

But he only started nine league games for United in 2012-13 and just six the following season and, after two appearances for Louis van Gaal, was loaned out last September.

Orlando City, who are in their debut season in MLS, made one high-profile transfer when they signed former World Player of the Year Kaka.
