William Carvalho too expensive for Monaco, confirms Leonardo Jardim

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim has ruled his side out of the chase for William Carvalho claiming the Arsenal target is too expensive for the Ligue 1 side.

Carvalho, 23, reportedly has a €45 million release clause in his contract with Sporting, a sum Monaco, who finished third in Ligue 1 last season, will not be paying.

"William Carvalho is already well thought of. Monaco won't make an investment of that kind this season to strengthen the team," said Portuguese coach Jardim to Record.

Monaco have already sold Geoffrey Kondogbia to Inter Milan this summer, and Jardim faces the prospect of a host of other first-team regulars leaving the Stade Louis II with the club keen to balance their books in light of potential financial fair play penalties.

Gone is the big-spending policy of summer 2013 when Monaco spent hundreds of millions on the likes of James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao and Joao Moutinho.

They have, however, already added to their squad in signing Argentine forward Guido Carrillo, who had been linked to both Benfica and Porto, and whom Jardim sees as complementing Anthony Martial.

He said: "Carrillo is coming to Monaco to compensate for Berbatov's departure. He's a different kind of player to Martial, a real penalty area striker, solid physically, a great presence in front of goal that gives us different solutions that Martial, who is more mobile, does not."
