Mohun Bagan have power to surprise Tampines Rovers in ACL playoff

Tampines Rovers must pay close attention to Mohun Bagan's lethal striker Cornell Glen when the two teams clash in Kolkata on Wednesday in an AFC Champions League preliminary round match.

The 2015 I-League champions will go into the game with confidence, having mounted a second half comeback to snatch a point in a 1-1 draw at the weekend against archrivals East Bengal.

Trinidad & Tobago international Glen scored the equaliser for his fourth goal in three games since joining the club late last year.

Coach Sanjoy Sen will be hoping for another man-of-the-match display by 17-year-old goalkeeper Debjit Majumdar.

He pulled off some amazing saves against East Bengal and will be crucial against Tampines' strike force of Jordan Webb and Fazrul Nawaz.

The latter was the top local scorer in the S.League last season with 18 goals, and his partner Webb grabbed the winner in a 1-0 victory over Johor Darul Ta'zim II in their final preseason friendly on Jan 22. Ex-Liverpool and Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant will sit this game out because the club could not register him in time.

V. Sundramoorthy's side must also closely watch Haitian winger Sony Norder, with the experience of Irwan Shah and Shakir Hamzah needing to come into play.

If they can cut off the supply from the flanks, Kwon Jun and Afiq Yunos will have an easier time against Glen and his diminutive strike partner, Jeje Lalpekhlua.

This early season game will be one of the biggest on both teams' 2016 calendar. Neither club have advanced to the group stages of the Champions League, but the visitors have a stronger track record in the AFC Cup competition

Before last year's failure to qualify, Tampines had been in the AFC Cup group stage since 2011.

Their best period in the AFC Cup was between 2005 to 2007 when they made it to the quarterfinal before exiting at the hands of Jordanian clubs Al-Wehdat SC and Al-Faisaly SC.

The two teams have met twice before during the 2007 AFC Cup group stages. A Noh Alam Shah brace gave the Stags a 2-0 home win while the return leg was a goalless draw..

Veteran midfielder Fahrudin Mustafic is the only player of the current squad involved in those two matches. But the ex-Singapore national player may have to watch on from the sidelines, with Sundram likely to opt for younger legs away from home.

The winners of the match will take on China Super League club Shandong Luneng next before a trip Down Under to face the A-League's Adelaide United in the second and third round playoffs.

The safety blanket of the AFC Cup will be there for either side, should they fail at any of the three qualifying rounds.
