Geylang close S.League campaign with seventh win of the season

Geylang International closed out their 2015 S.League season with a handsome 6-0 win over Warriors FC at the Bedok Stadium on Friday night.

A brace each from Bruno Castanheira and Jozef Kaplan, along with one apiece from Yuki Uchikawa and Hafiz Nor rounded up proceedings in what was a classic show of top-class finishing.

The home team came out all guns blazing, and went ahead in the eighth minute after Daniel Ong failed to hold on to defensive midfielder Uchikawa's shot, to allow the ball to thread into the bottom left corner.

It was 2-0 five minutes later, when another long-range shot off the boots of Castanheira sailed past a stranded Ong, who was having a miserable night in goal.

Fazrul Nawaz did put the ball into the back of the net on 41 minutes, but his goal was chalked off by the linesman for offside.

Warriors tried in vain to get back into the game, but aside from a couple of soft penalty calls, it was a dismal first half performance from the defending champions.

The second half kicked off in similar fashion, when a Shawal Anuar lob over the defence, sent Castanheira on his way, only for Ong to pull off a good save to deny the Japanese forward.

Another good move in the 59th minute almost allowed Kaplan to make it three for Geylang, after a string of pinpoint passes between Hafiz Nor and Tatsuro Inui.

Warriors' attack finally came to life when Hafiz Rahim's 61st minute through ball found Karlo Ivancic who slashed his shot into the side-netting.

As the visitors went in search of goals, Geylang went down the other end with 12 minutes left to make it 3-0 on the night through Kaplan. A precise cross set the Slovakian up for a first-time volley past Ong to send the Geylang fans into celebratory mood.

Barely two minutes later, it was Nor's turn to scorch the net when he sent an unstoppable screamer beyond the reach of Ong for the Eagles' fourth goal.

Warriors' defence crumbled beyond recognition as Kaplan and Castanheira both scored their second goal in the last seven minutes for their biggest win of the season.

The result gave Geylang their seventh win of the season to finish eighth, while Warriors closed out a dismal campaign with their 12th loss.
