Balestier's 'Iggy' hoping for more heroics in Hougang S.League clash

Ignatius Ang is looking to repeat past heroics when his Balestier Khalsa side takes on Hougang United in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday evening.

With a delicate swipe of his left boot, the 22-year-old midfielder had settled a tense affair between the two sides at the same venue last month to send the Tigers into the TNP League Cup final.

Although they ultimately lost out to Albirex Niigata (S) in the title match, the exquisite strike was a moment to savour for the man affectionately known as 'Iggy'.

"I enjoyed that goal a lot," Ang told ESPN FC. "Initially I didn't take too much notice of it until quite a number of people told me it was a classy goal.

"That made me go, 'wow, not bad'. Most importantly, it got us into the Cup final."

This has been the season of breakthrough for Ang, who has already made 22 appearances in all competitions scoring two goals. This is in stark contrast to his struggles of last year when he failed to break into the LionsXII first team.

"I'm really happy to get the opportunity to play regularly this year and show what I'm capable of," said Ang who spent his teenage years in the Tigers' youth setup before progressing into the National Football Academy (NFA).

"I was short of confidence at the start of the year because I had not played for a whole year. But right now, I'm slowly regaining my confidence and contributing more to the team.

"I've been getting into a lot of goalscoring situations lately but my finishing kept letting me down. It's time to convert some."

Ang, who had spent the 2012 season at Hougang, reminisced playing along technically gifted players like Mamadou Diallo and Jordan Webb.

However, he knows there is no room for sentiments come match day.

"I had a very good time back there and got a lot of exposure as a young player," said Ang. "But now I'm playing for a different team. So I'll have to be professional and do my job as a Balestier player."

Balestier are in good form since returning to S.League action, claiming two wins and two draws. Friday's task to overpower the Cheetahs could turn out to be more difficult though, given the Tigers will be missing at least five key players.

Igor Cerina and top scorer Miroslav Kristic are suspended while Ho Wai Loon and Fadhil Noh are out with long-term injuries. Forward Robert Pericic is also unlikely to recover in time for the game.

However, a defiant Ang believes the depleted Balestier have what it takes to grind out yet another good result and extend their unbeaten run to six in the league.

"We'll definitely miss their presence but this does not stop us from going into this game with a positive mindset," said Ang.

"We still have many good players at our disposal such as Zulkiffli (Hassim), Hanafi (Salleh) and Poh (Yifeng).

"Other players like Jonathan (Xu) and Wong (Ridwan Jamil) are also eagerly waiting to get some action and step up."
