S.League: Young Lions need to stay focused against in-form Harimau Muda

The two U23 outfits in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League will meet on Monday night in Malacca, where the Courts Young Lions and Harimau Muda will each hope to continue their good form.

After losing their first three games of the season, the hosts have been in fine fettle of late, going on to reel off five victories from their subsequent seven matches, with only one defeat during that superb run.

The Young Lions themselves have also posted encouraging results after the recent festive break period, winning one and drawing two of their last four matches.

Interim head coach Jürgen Raab, whose contract runs until September, has appeared to successfully instill a brand of possession football that has slowly reaped rewards.

A stirring comeback from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw against Balestier Khalsa last time out was also proof of their fighting spirit, leading Raab to state that he was "very proud of the team".

But the German also acknowledged that the Young Lions have to cut out the basic errors that are still littering their game. Both goals conceded were down to lapses in concentration, while further errors from the likes of M. Anumanthan and Farhan Rahmat went unpunished.

"We could be very happy that they didn't get the third goal; it would have been over for us, the match," he stated.

"It's important that after such a match that you can say we made a draw; [it was] important for the confidence."

Substitute Suria Prakash, who netted the crucial second goal, was quick to agree with his coach.

"We just need to be focused and concentrated, and not make too many mistakes and follow the game plan," he emphasised to ESPN FC.

"We are confident we can get the three points... We need to carry on our form and show what the Young Lions are capable of doing. We have been doing really well and we hope to carry on this form against Harimau Muda."

Suria, who admitted that it felt "great" to bag such an important strike, also believes that his side can learn from Razip Ismail's young charges given their similar characteristics.

"They are a U23 side just like us and in their last game, they beat Albirex Niigata (S) at their home-ground," he pointed out. "That was a very difficult game and they managed to get three points; being such a young and inexperienced side, they are doing well in the league."

The visitors do have injury concerns of their own. Sherif El-Masri is a possible doubt, while Shahfiq Ghani, Shamil Sharif and Irfan Fandi should continue to miss out. Suria himself is still recovering from a hamstring injury, although Amirul Adli and Afiq Mat Noor will return from suspension to bolster the squad.

The Young Lions will hope to bank on their newfound confidence in Hang Jebat Stadium as they chase the victory that will lift them off the foot of the table.

"Our bond off and on the pitch is getting a lot stronger," Suria revealed. "We are enjoying our football - with a lot of possession - and that's why we have more confidence."
