S.League: Home United grab dramatic late draw against Warriors FC

A thrilling derby encounter ended all square at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium on Thursday night after Warriors FC and Home United played out a 2-2 draw.

The clash between the two Great Eastern Yeo's S.League uniformed teams had everything from an early goal, a spirited comeback to a dramatic late equaliser.

With 95 minutes on the clock, Protectors defender Abdil Qaiyyim, headed in the equaliser to salvage a deserved point for the visitors against his former club.

Things looked rosy early on for Home, who got off to a smashing start by taking the lead after just three minutes.

Sirina Camara's cross was retrieved by Danish striker Ken Ilsø, as the Warriors defence appealed in vain for offside. The Dane bided his time on the ball near the right byline before cutting it back for Azhar Sairudin, who easily tapped in from two yards.

The shaky Warriors defensive line was exploited again by the Protectors, whose soak-and-strike strategy looked to be working a treat.

Ambroise Begue wasted a golden opportunity to double the lead when Juma'at Jantan threaded him through, firing straight at the onrushing Daniel Ong.

Then, Ilsø went down after appearing to have been caught by Ong as he raced clear, but referee Farhad Mohd waved it off.

The forward then spurned a good opening, glancing Kamel Ramdani's cross narrowly wide.

It took the hosts a while to get going and their first real chance came on 22 minutes through Fazrul Nawaz, whose stabbed effort was repelled by Shahril Jantan from close range.

But that was a sign of things to come from the forward, who set up the equaliser and then scored a second to turn things around.

First, a flick-on at the near post from Hafiz Rahim's corner in the 40th minute found Shi Jiayi unmarked and the midfielder turned in the equaliser from six yards.

After blazing wastefully over from 10 yards in an unmarked position shortly after, Fazrul was more clinical with his next opportunity when it came on 75 minutes.

Miroslav Pejic's left-wing cross picked out the 30-year-old, whose first-time effort was brilliantly saved by Shahril. However, the Singapore international reacted quickest to poke in the rebound.

In fact, the home side should have taken the lead even before then, but found themselves frustrated by Shahril, who made a fine double save to deny Nicolas Velez and Karlo Ivancic.

Home's task of salvaging the game was rendered considerably tougher five minutes after Fazrul's goal when substitute Fazli Ayob was shown a straight red card for an ugly challenge on Ivancic.

But the Warriors paid the price for not finishing off the game when Fazrul robbed Redzwan Atan and chose to shoot straight at Shahril, despite being in a three-on-one situation.

As the game wound down into the final seconds, Abdil stepped up as the hero of the night. The centre-back, who had an effort cleared off the line early in the second half, met Ilsø's delightful free kick with a powerful header past Ong before wheeling away to celebrate with his teammates.

It was a point that Philippe Aw insisted his side was more than worthy of, especially when they were a man down.

"Everyone ran more, fought more; you can see there's fire in our boys today and they never wanted to lose," said the Home head coach, who also praised Shahril for a "splendid" display.

"Because let's be honest, we didn't deserve to lose, we deserved at least one point, if not three, and credit to the boys, they never gave up until the last second.

"Football is a funny game... when they had the chance to seal the game and they couldn't put it in, we felt that we still had a chance.

"To go 2-1 down, of course it's disappointing, considering that we had the chances to increase the lead, but I'm glad we came back."
