Geylang focused on Albirex test in League Cup semifinal

Geylang International coach Jorg Steinebrunner said his side will take it one game at a time ahead of Sunday's semifinal clash with Albirex Niigata (S) in The New Paper (TNP) League Cup.

The Eagles will take the field at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Sunday knowing victory would take them one step closer to winning their first piece of silverware since 2009.

Although they have not exactly fired on all cylinders this season, the side based in Bedok Stadium showed just what they are capable of on Thursday evening when they produced a scintillating display to beat Brunei DPMM FC 4-2 in their final Group A encounter.

Nonetheless, Geylang coach Jorg Steinebrunner insists his charges cannot afford to get ahead of themselves against the White Swans who are currently second in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League.

"It would indeed be fantastic if we were to win the League Cup," he said. "But there's still a long way to go for that.

"We've done well to qualify from a tough group that also included Hougang United and DPMM. But we should remain grounded as there's a lot of hard work ahead of us in the 90 minutes against Albirex.

"There's no point dreaming about the final and then losing the semifinal -- we're not going to look at the second step before completing the first."

Steinebrunner is unlikely to tamper too much with his starting eleven following the victory over DPMM, which was one of their best displays of the season.

Bruno Castanheira starred for Geylang on Thursday with a clinical hat trick. Albirex will be fully aware of what he is capable of, given he played for them in two separate spells from 2010 to 2013.

Apart from Bruno, attacking midfielder Tatsuro Inui and defenders Kento Fukuda and Yuki Ichikawa will also be coming up against their former club.

Meanwhile, Albirex are also expected to retain the same line-up that beat GFA Sporting Westlake 2-0 on June 26, with Atsushi Kawata, Rion Taki and Shotaro Ihata set to lead the line.

Both teams met in the quarterfinals of the tournament last season, with the Eagles winning 3-1 win but going on to lose to eventual champions DPMM on penalties in the last four.
