S.League: Superb Geylang stun Warriors for first win in four matches

Geylang United snapped a three-game losing streak in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League on Saturday after recording an impressive 3-1 win over defending champions Warriors FC.

Goals from Jozef Kaplan and Bruno Castanheira handed the Eagles a comfortable half-time lead at the Bedok Stadium before Fazrul Nawaz reduced the deficit for the visitors in the 57th minute.

And with six minutes left on the clock, Kaplan was on target once more as he extinguished any hopes the champions had of forcing a draw, helping Geylang notch their first win since a 3-2 triumph over Tampines Rovers a month ago.

Given they entered Saturday's clash on the back of three losses, including a shock 2-1 defeat at Harimau Muda last Monday, the Eagles were widely regarded as underdogs but displayed plenty of endeavour in the opening exchanges.

And in the 14th minute, they broke the deadlock when Kaplan instinctively sent a first-time shot past Daniel Ong after Kento Fukuda had nodded Tatsuro Inui's corner into his path.

Eight minutes before the break, it was 2-0 to the home team when Nor Azli Yusoff's perfectly-weighted pass found Bruno Castanheira, who raced straight towards goal and dribbled past Daniel Bennett before coolly placing his shot into the bottom corner.

By then, the Warriors were in desperate need of a response if they were to rescue anything from the game, and they did manage to reduce the deficit three minutes before the hour mark.

Receiving possession from Miroslav Pejic just inside the box, Fazrul did well to create a yard of space for himself with a clever spin, before squeezing a left-footed effort in at the far post.

Despite having their lead cut, the hosts continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides, especially on the counter, but were simply unable to make the most of a number of goalscoring opportunities.

Nonetheless, they eventually managed to make sure of the three points in the 84th minute when Kaplan raced onto Hafiz Nor's excellent pass and cut onto his right foot, before drilling a shot into the bottom corner to seal the win for his side.

Speaking after the game, Steinebrunner praised his charges for the way they responded after a run of poor results and challenged them to maintain the same level of performance consistently.

"We played at the same level today as we did in pre-season and the win over Tampines Rovers earlier in the season," he said. "This is the level we are capable of playing at, but there's no point playing like that one week and then giving 20 to 30 per cent less the following week.

"If we had played like this in the past few games, we would easily have more points at the moment.

"We were solid defensively and could have scored more given the number of chances we created, and I believe it was a team performance that brought us the win today."
