S.League: Harimau Muda aim to extend winning streak

Harimau Muda coach Razip Ismail has called on his charges to build on their recent good form when they take on Geylang International in the Great Eastern Yeo's S.League in Malacca on Monday.

After beginning 2015 with three straight defeats, the Malaysian side found their feet in the past fortnight by recording consecutive 1-0 wins over Courts Young Lions and Home United.

Their recent triumphs also mean that for the first time this season they enter a match -- the clash against the Eagles at the Hang Jebat Stadium -- above their opponents on the table.

Nonetheless, Razip has warned his side not to get ahead of themselves as they look to make it three wins in a row against a Geylang side that have picked up just five points from their opening six games.

"I'm very pleased with our performance in the last two games," he told ESPN FC.

"We may have begun the season with three losses, but I always said those games -- against Brunei DPMM FC, Warriors FC and Albirex Niigata (S) -- were against very tough opposition.

"Back then, our focus was also on preparing for the AFC Under-23 qualifiers. Now that it is over, we can fully concentrate on the S.League.

"We had a tough test in our last match against Home and I'm expecting another similar match against Geylang. But it's important for the players to continue to improve and maintain our winning run."

Although Harimau Muda only managed six wins last season, one of those came against Geylang. They netted a last-minute winner to claim a 3-2 triumph at the Bedok Stadium back in June.

The last-gasp hero on that day, Ramzi Sufian, may no longer be plying his trade with the Young Tigers, but Razip still has plenty of firepower to call upon in the form of Faizat Ghazli, Ridzuan Abdunloh and Syafwan Syahlan.

On the other hand, Geylang will be looking to find that extra spark in the final third that will be needed to kickstart the season.

The Eagles have by no means been poor so far in 2015 and showed what they are capable of at the start of the month when they claimed a thrilling 3-2 win over Eastern derby rivals Tampines Rovers.

All of their three defeats so far this campaign have been by a one-goal margin. They certainly showed in their defeats against Albirex and Brunei that they are not far away from being a side that could cause a few problems for the S.League's traditional heavyweights.
