S.League: Coach Sundram wants more goals from Tampines Rovers

Tampines Rovers FC head coach V. Sundramoorthy wants his team to be more clinical in front of goal when they take on Geylang International on Friday at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Despite sitting at the top of the S.League table with nine points, the former LionsXII tactician is refusing to get carried away and reckons his team can still improve.

"We need to score more goals," declared the Singapore legend. "We have kept three clean sheets, which is key, but it is just as important to get as many goals as we can, even with the injury problems we are facing since the start of the season."

Tampines have been plagued with unfit players since the start of the season with Haitian striker Fabrice Noel and Mateo Roskam sitting out with ankle injuries. But Sundram has moved quickly to solve the ongoing crisis by deregistering the former to replace him with last season's S.League top scorer Rodrigo Tosi.

Sundram added: "Our biggest problem is injuries. We haven't had a chance to bring the full squad together but this is part and parcel of football. We have three wins and one loss out of four matches so I think we are still on track. Once Roskam is back, we should be able to do a lot better.

"Tosi is a good player who can help us score the goals we need. He also played with [Roberto] Alviz at DPMM and the two of them have a good understanding. This signing will definitely help us as a team and hopefully he can score the goals to win as many matches for us."

As for his team's title chances, Sundram feels that Tampines have just began their quest and will only get better.

"I wanted to go unbeaten for as long as possible." said the tactician. "Three wins and one loss in four games means we are still on track. We just need to focus game by game and move closer towards our target. And once our injury problems clear up, we will get even better."

His rival coach Jorg Steinebrunner is in a precarious position, having not won a game since the start of the campaign. Two draws and one loss hardly justifies the lofty ambitions of pre-season when pundits predicted that the Eagles could be dark horses for the season.

The only players who have showed up for the Eagles have been captain Jozef Kaplan and Japanese attacker Bruno Castanheira.

Kaplan has two goals to his name with Castanheira providing him with both assists. Against a formidable Tampines side, it will take a herculean effort for Geylang to get a result in this battle dubbed 'The Eastern Derby'.
