S.League: Geylang stopper Yazid urges continued focus against Balestier

Geylang International will travel to Toa Payoh Stadium on Friday night with the intention of recording their first win of the season against Balestier Khalsa FC.

A 1-1 draw might not be the most ideal result to start a season but for the Eagles, it was a good point earned on Tuesday.

Up against Great Eastern Yeo's S.League title hopefuls Home United FC, the hosts did not give up despite falling behind and rallied to avoid defeat.

The Eagles were not outclassed by the traditional powerhouses and goalkeeper Yazid Yasin told ESPN FC that his side can take heart from their courageous display.

"Apart for the first 20 minutes, the team played well and we matched Home throughout," he said. "A draw is a fair result and also a confidence booster, as we came from behind to draw level against one of the title favourites."

As for their next opponents Balestier Khalsa, things have not started well for Marko Kraljevic's team.

The Tigers, who have lost key players like Goran Ljubojevic, Park Kang-jin and Paul Cunningham, struggled to create chances in their opening 1-0 defeat to Warriors FC and appear to be a weaker proposition as compared to the previous campaign.

However, Yazid, the longest-serving player in the league, knows better than to underestimate them and called for the team to maintain their focus.

"Yes, they have lost some players but they are still a compact unit that works very hard together and we can't really judge them based on the first game," he explained.

"As a team, we do want to try and get three points in every game we play, but everyone needs to put in 100 per cent effort and commitment every single time in order for us to achieve that."

The 39-year-old, who racked up a record 400th S.League appearance in July last year, also shrugged off an error he made that indirectly led to Home's opening goal by Ken Ilsø Larsen on Tuesday.

"I don't really dwell on the mistakes I make because it's a game of 90 minutes," he asserted, dismissing any notions that there was a need for him to somehow make amends against Balestier. "I just move on, keep my focus and do everything possible to help the team."

Jorg Steinebrunner's outfit has been tipped in some quarters as a possible surprise package this season, boosted by signings like Bruno Castanheira, Tatsuro Inui, experienced campaigners Hafiz Osman and Sevki Sha'ban and former club talisman Jozef Kaplan.

Yazid, who returned to Bedok Stadium for his second spell at the start of the campaign, is inclined to agree with such an assessment.

"I think we are capable of matching the other teams in the league with a bit of luck and if the team stays injury-free, we could surprise a few," he noted.
